All of the cataclysmic events, from Vietnam to Woodstock and everything in between, have been firmly impressed onto our national consciousness. Our parents' generation grew up in these tumultuous times; for them, the film will have extra significance. For us? Well, there's certainly no lack of interest in the '60s among our generation (how many of you watched that NBC special a few months ago?) ...movie, written by Pamela Gray and directed by Tony Goldwyn, stretches plausibility to the snapping point. (In Woodstock, an impromptu city of 300,000 people that weekend, what are the odds you'd spot your mom with the blouse man? And, at the time of the moon landing, wasn't everyone talking about another little event that happened that weekend--Chappaquiddick?) It also lays on the Kantrowitzes' ethnicity too heavily; they are like chicken soup that's all schmaltz...
Take one fictional Ozzie-and-Harriet-like Irish-Catholic couple and their three teenagers. Put them through the crucible of the sexual and drug revolutions, the civil rights movement, Vietnam, women's lib, Watts and Woodstock. Then toss in newsreel footage of every conceivable major event that occurred during this tumultuous time. Now squeeze all this into a four-hour mini-series and try to tell a credible story. Ludicrous? Yet NBC pretty well manages the feat. Enacted by a solid cast and enhanced by a smartly used greatest-hits soundtrack, The '60s is clear-eyed, compassionate and surprisingly affecting...
