...Early one afternoon a large crowd of common workmen walked briskly through the streets of Warsaw, stopping beside clear spaces on walls every few paces, slopping paste on the walls, spreading out four posters which spelled one word: WAR. One ordered general mobilization (all able-bodied men between 21 and 40), another the prompt delivery of all motor vehicles, bicycles and horses to the State, a third prohibited the sale of alcoholic drinks. The fourth, picturing marching men, guns, tanks, planes and the handsome profile of Poland's Commander-in-Chief Marshal Edward Smigly-Rydz, declared: "Force must...
...Paris, where it has become routine to guard the nation's art against the menace of German guns, the doors of the Louvre were locked and workmen began stolidly to remove its treasures. Result: to earn the maximum monthly wage of $92.89 allotted to them, they need work only 53 hours a month. The unions' interest in thus preventing Unemployment from breaking the market for their labor was only natural. But WPA's prevailing-wage provision had other effects...
...Overwork. A Düsseldorf public health officer named Gottwald, while puffing up a smokescreen of acclaim for general health conditions in the Reich, admitted that the curves of increased illness among workmen and increased working hours are closely parallel. Hardest hit are men in the building trades, who work 14-hour and 16-hour days...
