...disagree with the description "shrinking" for today's Europe, because it betrays a biased viewpoint that suggests success is measured in aspirations to lead the world. Europe - a continental power of nations with a great variety of cultures in a relatively small area - has managed to reduce prejudice derived from exaggerated nationalism and small-state policies on its way to prosperity and peace, and all this after suffering incredible violence and distress through its long history. I agree with Robinson that Europe is a remarkable place to live. Rainer E. Becker, WILHELMSHAVEN, GERMANY
People call you a decent man. But politics is not always a decent game. In the right and tumble world of Greek politics, is decency an effective political strategy? Europe began after the Second World War, so it basically was the dream to say: "Never again, war on this continent." And as a matter of fact, it has succeeded in bringing in countries, making them more democratic. Greece, Spain, Portugal initially, then the Central and Eastern European countries. It still is a living peace project, creating...
...exception of Michael Lind's "The Boring Age." We could have moon colonies if it were economically feasible. Because of PCs, advanced linguistics and organizations that care, hundreds of "primitive" cultures are acquiring an alphabet and a written language for the first time. They are leaping into the modern world. Lind is in the Stone Age. Bob Thomas Elizabethton, Tenn...
