...quite a character, but the audience has no idea why his role exists. Maybe he is supposed to represent the government, which is arbitrary and cruel under the guise of kind Uncle Sam. If we felt that the characters in the commune had any relation to the outside world the explanation might hold, but as it is the short appearance of the landlord makes as much sense as any of the characters' actions...

...Adding Clerk (Eddie Montoya '02) do a fabulous job of doubling dialogue and repeating each other with static variations. Coupled with the aimless chatter of the Stenographer (Kate Agresta '02) and the Telephone Girl (Thandi Parris '01), an environment of alienation is complete. Everything about this world is artificial, including the commotion when Helen (Erica Rabbit '00) enters the room. The boss has a strange affinity for her and her hands, despite her neurotic and repressed personality...

...nonfiction in this volume, it is Gordimers practice to reveal truths that are painfully obvious to most anybody. The subtitle of the volume is Notes from Our Century, and Gordimer makes a case study of historical progress out of her native South Africa, taking us from the world of apartheid through redemption to the post-apartheid era. But her words begin to sound false: not the falseness of lies, but of emotional untruth...
