...recording, Rewired does show this trippy quality. While the album's blurry red cover art does indicate Lockgroove's hard, masculine sound, it doesn't convey how psychedelic that music can be. It throbs, like a beating red heart. "Come On," a signature track, uses minutes of wavy keyboard woven in with guitar and cymbals to introduce a rhythmic fusion of rock and elecronic music. Soon half-chanty, half-punky lyrics join in and there are occasional whistles and bells. But ultimately the sound is full of relentless waves of guitar, drum and keyboard...
...sixth track, "Peaches and Cream," has food and sex on the brain again, and it marshals the R&B sound that was shyly woven into the more frenetic first half of the album. Although this track has a full-bodied sound and great lyrics like "You make a garbage man scream," the next few tracks are the weakest on the album. They're too slow--one of the most important differences between Midnite Vultures and previous albums is the faster tempo that puts several layers of samples and synth between us and Beck's sometimes too languorous voice...
...what is most encouraging of all is the unsqueamish nature of anime; it doesn't hesitate to cross boundaries Americans normally consider taboo in their kids' programming if the plot is enhanced through it. Realistic deaths of characters, intimations of rape, even cross-dressing, if woven in properly, can lead to some wonderfully executed climaxes...
