Design and architecture magazines and chic boutiques are full of the terra-cotta pots, vivid woven rugs and ceramic tiles of the Santa Fe style, and homebuilders around the country are busy slapping stucco onto plywood and chicken wire to satisfy a growing yen for adobe homes. At the same time, more public buildings are being constructed in a modern flourish on the Old World style of Spain, with arched porticoes, wide, shady courtyards and bubbling fountains. "I like...

...designers have their chance to shine. Last year's winner of the Rising Star award, Esteban Ramos, 26, wowed the crowd with a Spanish tango collection of ruffled tops and sweeping skirts in periwinkle, mint and peach. For this year's gala, he will feature richer, deeper colors, hand-woven textures and fabric accented with tassels and trims. "Picture a sarape, or Mexican blanket," he says. "That's my theme." By the time the finest white cashmere reaches the U.S., it costs up to $200 a yard. A lower grade from Iran and Afghanistan goes for $100 a yard. Experiments to breed the goats elsewhere are being tried in Australia, New Zealand, Iowa, Montana and Colorado. But removed from the deserts and mountains of their rugged natural habitat, the animals grow fat and so far have produced a disappointingly...

...Moscow Trials of 1936 were, he recalls, "a decisive turning point in my own intellectual and political development . . . I never suspected that ((Stalin)) and the Soviet regime were prepared to violate every fundamental norm of human decency that had been woven into the texture of civilized life." Some friends and colleagues remained lockstep Stalinists, and Hook brings them onstage as object lessons. Lincoln Steffens had famously seen the future in the U.S.S.R. and proclaimed that it worked. It was less well known, notes the author, that Steffens "had previously seen it in Italy . . . where he thought it had also worked...
