Since the rowing started last Wednesday the three eights have indulged in only short work-outs up-stream with a view to smoothing out the almost necessary roughness of the first few days in a new order. Yesterday the candidates for the University crew reported for the first day of fall rowing. Three eights were made up and sent up-stream for a short paddle, the work being directed by Coach Wray from the launch "John Harvard." The four veterans of last year's eight which won from Yale last June, Newton, Cutler, Strong and Metcalf, were placed in the waist of the boat at stroke, 7, 6, and 5 respectively. No hard work will be attempted until the last week of the fall season, when a three and one-half mile handicap race will be held between the three crews.
