...dearth of straight plays, at least those with enough beef to legitimately compete for a Best Play award. Two of the four nominees this year (Anna in the Tropics and The Retreat From Moscow) closed months ago. And the favorite to win is I Am My Own Wife, Doug Wright?s rather trumped-up monologue about an East German transvestite who recounts her life under both Nazism and Communism, which seems mainly the excuse for a bravura performance by Jefferson Mays...

...Bryant and Milam, who later confessed in Look magazine, were perfect, arrogant villains, but few in Money, Miss., thought they had acted alone. Civil rights leaders and the African-American press turned up witnesses--some suggesting that two of Milam's black employees were accomplices. (Both denied it.) Mose Wright often described that fatal female voice, speculating that it must have been Carolyn Bryant's. (She could not be reached for comment.) Till's indomitable mother Mamie Till Mobley and her supporters vainly lobbied the government to reinvestigate. She died last year...

That is fine with Simeon Wright. He loves the film. He differs with those who see little point to the investigation now that Bryant and Milam are dead. "Would it be proper for us to say Mohammed Atta and all his boys are dead, so let Sept. 11 die?" he asks. "We can know who was in the conspiracy. They're in their 70s now. ...time. In that first version, players controlled the lives of miniature 3-D suburbanites. They were as willful and idiosyncratic as real children, yet as ageless--and ultimately static--as sitcom families. In this sequel, which is about a hundred times as detailed and animated, creator Will Wright has added the dimension of time. Your Sims grow from mewling infants to wizened crones in the space of an average 25 hours of game play, Wright says. The sudden arrival of birthday cake signals growth from one year to the next...

...Sims 2 ($49.99 for PC) hits shelves on Sept. 17, a full nine months after its original due date. Wright's team is also hard at work on a highly cartoonish city-dweller version of The Sims for Xbox, GameCube and PlayStation 2, called The Urbz, which is set to appear before Christmas. In The Urbz, your goal is even more elusive than living a good life. Basically, you're looking to rack up cool points and persuade gangs of punks, rappers or ravers to emulate your style. It's survival of the hippest. Zombie-killing teens need not apply...
