...Compaq, a move that is generating boardroom chaos even now, eight months after the announcement. Whatever happens, HP and Compaq are two companies whose core products—printers for HP and services and consulting for Compaq—are under attack or not growing. Merging the two to wring some advantage out of their disastrous PC divisions would only further dilute the earnings contribution of their viable divisions. As such, Fiorina’s approach—profits through layoffs, growth through acquisition instead of innovative R & D—represents the worst possible strategy for resurrecting Hewlett Packard...

...even deeper fact of sarcasm is that it gives the reader some measure of interest and opens writing up to interpretation—a side effect unknown to funereal earnestness. Whether the readers laugh, nod or wring out angry letters to the editor, they have learned something about themselves. One might argue that journalism should be unbending and obvious, that we don’t read The New York Times to learn about ourselves. Perhaps sarcasm is strictly the province of novelists and playwrights. ...Melliot (seemingly over a lunch break), the threadbare premise rests on clichés, non sequiturs, feeble attempts at humor and characterization as thin as rice-paper. With such material to work with, it is unsurprising that even a talented actor’s director like Yip fails to wring effective performances from his cast. Leon Lai is characteristically handsome and bland, while Jordan Chan is uncharacteristically unengaging and aloof. Even Sam Lee’s manic persona is considerably tamer here. Hsu Chi, one of the few actresses in modern cinema to possess acting skills to accompany her pretty...
