Overall, though, even a pall of serious confusion is surmountable if a production manages to create some connection between the audience and the action on stage. However, in this rendition the audience is offered no character with whom to identify. As it is written,Superstar can be performed either as a story of Judas or one of Jesus. In the case of the former, the director must allow the audience to recognize the character of Judas as a narrator. He sings the expositional opening number and the flashy closing number; between these two, if he is visible and relevant...

...maturity and complexity of the music itself, with instruments ranging from Bennett's roommate Rex Graff's '00 harmonica to Warren's fellow a cappella singers in The Wellesley Blue Notes, are echoed in the lyrics, whether they be written by Bennett or Warren. "Becky moves me lyrically in a way that very few musicians do," says Bennett; "even her words on the page are poetry to me. She's brilliant...

...just the sound quality of the album itself that will amaze you; the music itself, described by North House as "the lovechild of Bonnie Raitt and Lenny Kravitz" with some Jimi Hendrix and Dave Matthews Band thrown in, is incredible. Bennett's smooth, relaxed voice sounds as if it were born knowing what to do on each song...

...Surprisingly enough, the album's strongest track is the only song on the album not written by the veteran singer/songwriter performing it. The Artist's cover of "Every Day is a Winding Road" is scarcely recognizable as the same song that Sheryl Crow sang. Instead, he has infused the pop song with a distinctly bluesy feel that indelibly claims it as the musical property of the Artist once known as Prince. The way he makes Crow's song his own reminds his listener of the immense musical talent that he possesses, a fact that will only make fans bemoan...

...Burton's next project was the production of The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), a stop-motion animated film based upon a three-page poem written by Burton while working at Disney. Disney gave Burton the go-ahead for the project, and while he didn't direct it, he was deeply involved in the development process. The story, set like Scissorhands and Batman Returns at Christmas, is about Jack Skellington, the ruler of Halloweentown and his suffering what amounts to a mid-life crisis. Upon discovering Christmastown, Jack believes that this is a way to re-invigorate Halloween, and he misguidedly...
