...Angry Man combines some of the finest motion picture effects with many of the worst. Scenes of sheer poetry are juxtaposed with others of outrageous banality; splendid camera work is sometimes ruined by the most needless background music; several beautifully delivered speeches are muted by close-ups on the wrong faces. Only Paul Muni's performance as Dr. Samuel Abelman--the title figure--is consistently good...

This task is hardly simple. Sullivan is a labor leader whose convincing personality and name hopefully will win him support from districts normally unsympathetic to the Brattle St. campaigners. Yet perhaps his greatest advantage, the name Sullivan, might lead to such confusion that voters will pick the wrong man entirely...

Needless to say, the pathos is, in this production, an awkward intrusion. Contrasting strangely with the thick boffola of the comic scenes, it produces a sense of dislocation, a sort of emotional lacuna. Not that there is anything wrong with emotional lacunae: such an effect was doubtless what the producers of the original film were after. But the dislocation in the present version acts to no purpose and fails to convey the desired jarring effect...

Benson was wrong on both counts. Corn production is up by 600 million bu., and farmers piled on so much of everything else that net feed production is up 5%.
