...short, as Barber and his colleagues explain in a recent paper in Geophysical Review Letters, the analysis of what the satellites were seeing was wrong. Some of what satellites identified as thick, melt-resistant multiyear ice turned out to be, in Barber's words, "full of holes, like Swiss cheese. We haven't seen this sort of thing before." ...What's wrong with the IPCC? To some degree, it's a victim of its own size. In a group as large as the IPCC, producing climate-assessment reports in excess of 1,000 pages - exclusively with voluntary labor - errors are going to be inevitable. Humans make mistakes and the IPCC has owned up to its error, says Richard Somerville, an atmospheric scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a lead author on the 2007 IPCC report...
IPCC supporters point out that the global body does a self-assessment after every major report, looking at what went wrong and what can be improved. There will inevitably be improvement as the IPCC moves forward, says Bob Corell, a scientist with the Arctic Governance Project and the Global Environment and Technology Foundation. Each time it gets better...

Lawyers say there would have been nothing legally wrong with AIG's negotiating to pay some banks less than others on the CDS insurance they had bought from AIG. In fact, since the CDS contracts insured different bonds, it would have been normal for those insurance contracts to be settled at different prices...
What’s so wrong with that, you ask? What’s wrong with allowing people to make choices that in turn make them feel better about themselves? To be honest, I don’t really have an answer other than that it’s tragic that one must feel thin in our society to feel happy and that it must be exponentially more painful to wear skinny jeans than it is to watch someone wearing them...
