...areas make the trip to town. "Aboriginal people live, breathe and sleep football," says Warren Greatorex, an assistant coach and player with the Halls Creek Hawks. "Football keeps small communities going." The Hawks play in a bush league of seven, with three teams from Kununurra and one each from Wyndham, Timber Creek (N.T.) and Warmun. In these parts, says Derby-born Greatorex, indigenous players are athletic and naturally skilful. In spite of the warm temperatures, the local game is fast-paced. ...Next to the highway, a dozen station hands and visitors are helping to load a double-decker, three-carriage road train; 1,200 hooves are bound for nearby Alice Downs and then Wyndham for shipping. As ringers crack whips, three women are prodding mickeys (young bulls) through a series of pens; red dust and deep-voiced murmurs of "Get on" and "Go" fill the air. The FBI was waiting for him. But before making the arrest, they recorded a lengthy conversation in which he allegedly incriminated himself in the bulk missile purchase. When agents finally burst in, Lakhani was so stunned that he stood frozen in the middle of the room...

...site opened under Wyndham's management wyndham.com in February after the owner's 15-year struggle against not-in-my-backyarders and the logistical challenges of building a 42-acre, 156-unit resort on a remote former sugar plantation. Located on the northern shore, the Wyndham is the only resort of its size on the island. It offers a conference and banquet room for 180 people and plans to add a casino, spa and dive shop. Rooms, which range from $250 to $500, are luxurious if scarcely distinguishable from what you might find, say, on Grand Cayman...
