DIED. Salvador de Madariaga, 92, erudite, witty, prolific man of letters, interpreter of Spanish culture and diplomat; in Locarno, Switzerland. When King Alfonso XIII abdicated in 1931, Madariaga became the Spanish Republic's first Ambassador to the U.S. and its delegate to the League of Nations. After the Spanish Civil War, he became an energetic opponent of Franco, living in England, broadcasting to Latin America for the BBC, and working for various international organizations.
