...Among the paupers in Westchester County Home near Elmsford, N. Y. were Frederick Rupt, 75, and John Doyle, 70. From their tiny allowances they saved money for a spree, one night last week walked into an Elmsford tavern, split a dozen cans of beer. Near 1 a.m. they were rolling homeward, Frederick Rupt favoring his wooden right leg. They fell afighting and when Frederick Rupt clumped away, John Doyle was lying by the road. Oldest U. S. engineering school is Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N. Y., founded in 1824 by Dutch Patroon Stephen Van Rensselaer. Rensselaer, self-styled "birthplace of technology," is fanatically devoted to "practical" learning. Its students (now numbering 1,500) go to their first classes at 8 a.m., rarely knock off before 4:30 p.m. They are too busy for drinking, dancing, big-time athletics or campus chitchat (only one-third live in dormitories). Offering no snap courses, Rensselaer strips down even English and Philosophy to their utilitarian bones. English is studied by Rensselaer men primarily as a tool...

Greatest U. S. Protestant layman is Dr. John Raleigh Mott. For more than 50 years Dr. Mott, a serene-faced man of disciplined energy, has traveled the world for the Y. M. C. A. and the International Missionary Council. The I. M. C., coordinator of Protestant foreign missions, re-elected Dr. Mott its chairman at its meeting in Madras last winter.
