...clear if Fujisaki made a decision on confiscation of investment portfolios. In any case, O.J. probably hasn't seen the last of the sheriff's moving van. Another order signed Monday requires Simpson to turn over 66 items to the estate of his late wife, including a six-foot Yamaha grand piano and letters from former President Richard Nixon congratulating Simpson on his athletic feats. Meanwhile, egged on by fears that Simpson won't be able to pay the entire judgement against him, the Brown and Goldman families are each fighting to make sure they get their share...
Overseeing the Pearl series is music historian Artis Wodehouse, whose Gershwin Plays Gershwin album won raves when it came out in 1994. For that CD, Wodehouse rerecorded Gershwin's piano-roll performances by playing them on a Yamaha Disklavier, a kind of computer-driven player piano. The Pearl set is based on actual historic recordings--78s, Edison 80s, radio-broadcast acetates. Wodehouse painstakingly tracked them down around the country and cleaned them up for modern ears. "It's a shame that they got lost in the shuffle," says Wodehouse. "But great pop music comes back, and that is what...
Most of the bikes point to easy parking as the major advantage to the motorcycle over the car. McPartland, part of the Winthrop suite, often rides his Maxim 550 Yamaha bike between Winthrop and his classes in the yard. "If I can go some-where where there's an option between walking and riding, I'll ride." When asked if this made him feel lazy, McPartland responded with assurance, "I feel lazy regardless. It doesn't matter." But Rich Beukema, a senior in Winthrop who has ridden across the country three times on his bike and currently rides a Honda...
...bikers agree that riding through Cambridge is difficult and dangerous. Maniatis, owner of a Yamaha Fazer, claims to have "come near death quite a few times" and recently almost ran in to a bus. Millan once fell off his bike when he hit a patch of send in the middle of a sharp turn. Still, he was able to get back on the bike and drive himself to the hospital. With the agressive Cambridge driving style, Beukema worries about the apparent rise in numbers of Harvard motorcycle riders. "I worry for other people driving around here...
...playing. "I spent thousands of hours listening to Gershwin's recordings," says Wodehouse, a Stanford-trained pianist and musicologist who got a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1989 to work on the project. Using a rare 1911 88-note Pianola, in conjunction with a new Yamaha Disklavier, a kind of super-player piano that converts a performance into computer information, she was able to realize the earlier rolls. Wodehouse personally operated the Pianola and painstakingly fiddled with the rolls until she was satisfied with the performances. "I put in dynamics and accents," says Wodehouse. "I played...
