...Reagan initiative was long overdue. While the nation's manned space program has been grounded since the Challenger disaster, the commitment of Americans to space exploration remains firm. In a poll taken for TIME by Yankelovich Clancy Shulman, most respondents agree that it is important for the U.S. to be the world's leading space-faring nation, and more than half fear that the U.S. has slipped behind the Soviets. Washington's dilemma has been how to maintain pre-eminence in space without exacerbating record budget deficits. Reagan's answer surprised no one: privatize wherever possible. True, his plan reasserted...
...poll for TIME by Yankelovich Clancy Shulman, 42% of those who saw or read about the exchange said they believed that Bush came out ahead, while 27% said Rather did. (Republicans split 59% to 16% in Bush's favor, but Democrats split 40% to 31% in Rather's favor.) Yet when asked whether it was right for Rather to push Bush on his role in the Iran-contra affair, 59% replied that it was (including 46% of the Republicans and 72% of the Democrats). Iowans of both parties who say they will participate in next month's caucuses are far more eager than voters nationwide to move the U.S. in a new direction. In a survey for TIME by Yankelovich Clancy Shulman,* 50% of Iowa Republicans say they would like the next President to "follow different policies" from the Reagan Administration's, compared with 39% who would stay on the same course. Nationally, Republican voters prefer the status quo over change by 58% to 32%. Iowa Democrats also display a marked contrast to voters nationwide: in Iowa, 93% favor a change from the Reagan...
Nonetheless, a majority of the American public seemed to agree with the Administration's criticism of Israeli tactics during the riots. In a poll conducted last week for TIME by Yankelovich Clancy Shulman,* 50% agreed that the Israelis had used "too much force" to quell the Palestinian protests, while only 23% said Israel had used "about the right amount." Fifty-six percent said Israel had in general treated the Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza unfairly, while only 16% thought they had been handled fairly. And 50% of those polled said the U.S. was right to criticize Israel...
