Since time immemorial, the faculty has decidedly quenched all signs of such a thing as playing in the yard. We have even seen a foot-ball man prevented by a member of the faculty from tossing a foot-ball in the air while crossing the yard. This rule, however, does not seem to apply to the Cambridge non-collegiate youths who assemble daily on the avenue in front of the library and play "polo" to the great inconvenience of all who have to cross the yard. Consistency has never been a strong point of the faculty, but here at last...
This year's Index may well claim superiority over numbers of previous years in at least one particular. The "Directory of rooms in the college yard." pp. 172-180, cannot but be of value to the college at large. Certainly the "subscription fiend" will glory in it, and although his glory may be others' sorrow, still a really valuable feature of the Index should not be condemned for any such slight disadvantage. It is, however, a matter of regret that this directory was not made to include the more important buildings out of the yard, such as Holyoke, College House...

...matter of landscape gardening Harvard certainly does not excel. Much as we prize the beauty of the yard as it is, we think that there is still great room for improvement. It is but a few days since the authorities in a well-meaning way spread a nasty mess of muck over the entire yard, the odors arising from which being not only offensive but unhealthy. We would remind the fossiliferous yokel who has charge of the farming department of the university, that the fertilizer in question is now only used in the cultivation of potatoes and cabbages in rural...
