Laymen's fingers are still pointed. People still ask to be told the sense of what they like to call Modigliani's "daubs." And they have been answered variously. Recently an absurd attempt was made to apply the yardstick to Modigliani, to prove that he did not distort human anatomy.* Others admit the distortion but defend it by saying that the Egyptians distorted, as did El Greco, the Italian primitives. The merits of Modigliani, they add, are many: his color is finely schematic; his line is sensitive and delineates the sitter's character with wit and insight...

...Fords. Measured by the simple yardstick of units produced, the automobile industry would appear to be thriving. Yet while the number of cars manufactured during the first eight months of 1929 showed a 37.2% increase* over the same period last year, this was almost entirely accounted for by the phenomenal rise in Ford production. In July and August this Ford increase offset the decline shown by other manufacturers and accounted for approximately 40% of the total cars produced in the U. S. and Canada. These facts are illustrated in the following table compiled by the Wall Street Journal...

Then as a surprise each boy was given a combination radio-phonograph, said to be valued at $400. When the speeches were over they filed up to the platform, spoke their names into a microphone, shook hands with all of the Committee except Col. Lindbergh who stood back and nodded politely. When Candidate Reid went up there...

...Liberal, Conservative-breathed fervent relief as the armament-race demon was definitely scotched. The three chief scotchers were President Herbert Clark Hoover, Prime Minister James Ramsay MacDonald and Ambassador Charles Gates Dawes-an engineer, a Socialist and a lawyer. Engineer Hoover has called for the invention of a scientific "yardstick" to gauge the relative strengths of war boats and cut the world's navies proportionately. Socialist MacDonald told Parliament, last week, that he intends to cooperate along the Hoover line, even to the extent of journeying personally to negotiate in the White House next October. He added, sensationally, that...
