Three years after his death, Yasser Arafat still has the capacity to conjure up violence. At a huge memorial rally in Gaza on Monday, at least six people were killed and 80 wounded when supporters of the Palestinian chairman's successor, Mahmoud Abbas, clashed with Islamic militants of Hamas. Arafat's Fatah organization, now headed by Abbas, has been in the middle of a virtual civil war with Hamas since June. Indeed, they have divided up the two Palestinian enclaves between them, with Hamas dominating the Gaza Strip and Fatah controlling the West Bank...
...issue valence: even among white Evangelical Protestants, the war is described as very important by 66%, compared with 56% for social issues. That can only help the former New York City mayor whose local war on terrorism was viewed as more competent than Bush's and who famously ejected Yasser Arafat from Lincoln Center and practically wore a cape to work as an urban crime fighter...
...nomination papers for 43 presidential hopefuls, including Musharraf, were being scrutinized for eligibility. Some 1,000 lawyers and political workers brandishing banners and shouting "Go, Musharraf, go!" were forcibly prevented from entering the Electoral Commission grounds. Within minutes of reaching the gate, baton-wielding police charged the protesters. Yasser Raja, a 33-year-old lawyer from nearby Rawalpindi, was beaten repeatedly on the head; when he attempted to protect himself the police continued to attack, causing extensive damage to his upraised arm. His lawyer's uniform of white shirt and black suit was soaked in blood, but he continued...
...Taliban in their desire to obliterate the state of Israel. If Israel did not guard its borders, it would be overrun by suicide bombers and its citizens would be murdered daily. Israel, until recently, provided Gaza with most of its water, energy and power needs. Fatah's former leader Yasser Arafat embezzled $3 billion from his poor Palestinian "brethren." Furthermore, in light of Saddam Hussein's paying $10,000 to each suicide bomber's family and of the alliance between Hamas founder Ahmed Yassin and the World Trade Center bombers, it seems rather ludicrous to defend any of the parties...
...which was created in 1994 as an interim body for Palestinian self-rule in the occupied territories as a prelude to statehood, is now in shambles. After years of single-party rule by Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, the PA became a paragon of corruption and mismanagement. Hamas won control of the PA's legislature and government in democratic elections of January 2006, prompting a Western boycott of much of the Authority. And after the short, sharp civil war in Gaza in June, Palestinians now have in effect two rival governments - one run by the Islamist militants of Hamas...
