...Ratings have fallen off, and so has much of the excitement. A couple of hours spent watching MTV today reveal how quickly the avant-garde can become passe. With a few exceptions (the dazzling tattoo of animated images that illustrates Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer), videos have settled into a yawn-provoking rut. Typically they feature scenes of the band in performance intercut with snippets of a fanciful "story" or dressed up with now familiar visual gimmicks (cliche of the season: neoprimitive black and white). Is MTV an idea whose time has already gone...
...would also note that the graduate orator was pretty much of a yawn, but my unfamiliarity with the field of candidates, and the fact that he was not being held up as a representative of undergraduate prowess, makes me less concerned about his selection. It was only Martin Brinkly's exceptional Latin Oration that prevented this part of Commencement from turning into an unmitigated disaster...

Those calling for time to run "counter-programming" only further the dangerous impression that Amerika's farcical mix of geopolitical and romantic drama deserves to be taken seriously. Predictably, the most appropriate response to this explosive drama is a yawn...
