Kaplan's accomplishments are exceptional. He holds two Harvard records--in the 50-yd. and 100-yd. freestyle events--and was a member of the 400-yd. freestyle relay team that set the current mark. Last year he took first place in the 50-yd. freestyle at the Eastern Championships. And this season he made his fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA Championships, swimming a leg on the fifth-place medley relay team to earn All-America honors...
Berkoff would end the day with another gold medal and another national record in 100-yd. backstroke. The record-breaking journey that had taken him from Cambridge to the 1988 Seoul Olympics and finally to Indianapolis had ended...
After Big Green running back David Clark set an Ivy League record by scoring on a 97-yd. touchdown run and wide receiver Craig Morton caught seven passes for 199 yards, those chances disappeared...
...scientists call earth grazers. Holt figures that 1989FC may be in Hermes' league, but other astronomers dispute the claim, saying the new asteroid may be only 100 yds. across. Even if the smaller size is correct, no one would want to have 1989FC land in the backyard. A 100-yd.- wide asteroid hitting the earth at a speed of nearly 50,000 m.p.h. could dig a crater a mile or so across and several hundred feet deep -- similar in size to a gaping hole in the Arizona earth, known as Meteor Crater, that was blasted out some 40,000 years...
Lobstermen in Kennebunkport, Me., are boiling mad about special arrangements for one of the neighbors. They learned last week that the U.S. Coast Guard will enforce a 500-yd. "security zone" in the waters around George Bush's summer home on Walker's Point, site of some of Maine's best lobstering. Whenever the President is in residence, Coast Guard cutters will stop and search lobster boats seeking to enter the zone. Even more frustrating to the 40 or so lobstermen affected: the cutters' propellers tend to get snarled in the traplines, resulting in dozens of lost traps...
