...lonely work. A man stares out his pickup window and wonders how love could abandon him with such ease and finality. So Prine, who knows a bit about hurt--he has recently survived cancer of the neck--has called on a few good women (including Patty Loveless, Trisha Yearwood, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams) to join him in no-frills, no-foolin' duets on 15 country chestnuts. The one new song is Prine's own title tune, a funny, grimy anthem for two misfits who suit each other fine. It says even driving himself to hell, he ought to be able...
...machine-generated Top 40 hits or tracks that weren't good enough to make other albums. The sound track for the movie Life is refreshing because it reflects a singular vision. Although the album features artists ranging from R. and B./hip-hop diva Mya to country singer Trisha Yearwood, virtually all the songs were written by one performer, R. Kelly. After that: Havana, a "musical comedy noir" set in the 1940s; a musical version of Alice in Wonderland; and Svengali, the second (after Jekyll) in what he envisions as a gothic trilogy...
...last month's Country Music Awards, Matraca Berg picked up a Song of the Year trophy for Strawberry Wine, co-written with Gary Harrison. That was a ho-hum: the Nashville scribe has penned prime bedroom and barroom laments for Reba McEntire (Last One to Know), Trisha Yearwood (XXX's and OOO's), Martina McBride (Wild Angels), Patty Loveless (You Can Feel Bad) and other country thrushes. But that same night, Berg sang Back When We Were Beautiful, about a widow recalling her one and only love, and put so much ache and age into it you could hear...
