With yesterday's practice, G. W. Thompson '99, took the place of E. H. Sears '99, as coach of the Freshman squad for the remainder of the season. Plans of development have not yet been definitely decided upon, but it is more than likely that the same system of appointing temporary captains will be pursued. It is also probable that the squad will be cut down this year, before the regular out-door work begins...
...There is yet another publication which fills no distinot place whatever and which is run much on the same plan as were the "Index" and the "Portfolio"- the "Club Book." There seems to be no way of supplanting this publication except by including in the book to be published under the auspices of the Senior class all that is now contained in the "Club Book," and by a refusal on the part of every undergraduate to have anything to do with the publication of that book. By doing this the representative college publications will receive a more hearty support...
...candidates go through dumb-bell and other light exercises and run about two miles on the board track. Of late these runs have increased in length. '98 went 11 miles on Saturday and the '99 squad ran about nine miles yesterday afternoon. None of the squads have as yet been reduced, but next week when the crews start regular rowing on the river the number will be cut down. At least twenty-four men, however, are likely to be taken from each class...

The objection is sometimes raised that a university should teach knowledge and not practice, yet Harvard has already departed from this in the presentation of English which is taught because every one should know it.
