Members of the State Department have called the Seminar "the best method yet devised of presenting America to Europeans." But since its start, the school has avoided any official connection with the Government lest Europeans consider it a propaganda tool. Even so, many of the students, particularly in 1947, came to the Seminar on the lookout for indoctrination in the "American way." Often they were surprised to discover that the Americans on the faculty and staff were willing to examine criticism of the United States. The democratic atmosphere, at the Casile made propaganda unnecessary. Most of the Europeans were impressed...

...Over. Last week everyone this side of the Iron Curtain was beckoning the tourists and reaching for the $500 million in Yankee dollars that the visitors would leave behind them. Everywhere, hotels were getting a sprucing-up, and red tape an unraveling (many countries- had abolished visas). If not yet back to prewar standards and costs, foreign travel was getting simple enough to be good fun again...

...perfect little Anglophiles, wholly ashamed of their own country. Of course, they may have spoken in defense of it merely because they were assigned to that side of the discussion, but if they were insincere, they managed to hide it. Possibly the day will yet come when Harvard men of their view will find their way into the state department. Today the department has no lack of Harvard men. What it needs is patriots...
