Perhaps the dispute over the war's monument at least will be put to rest. When Designer Maya Ying Lin's Viet Nam Memorial was unveiled in 1982, few denied the power of the low, somber black granite wall, now engraved with the names of 58,007 Americans dead or missing in the war. Nonetheless, many veterans felt that the wall was not uplifting, not heroic enough. So officials of the memorial fund risked the wrath of those who liked the wall as it was and asked Frederick Hart, 40, a Washington sculptor who had finished third...
...confiscating their vehicles. But publicity in the national press forced the officials to return the vehicles. The government, similarly, ordered a Shanghai rubber-research institute to reinstate an engineer who had been demoted for helping a small factory improve its miniature rubber bearings during his off-hours. Wang Ying, an independent fruit vendor in Peking, found herself on the front pages of the newspapers when an outraged policeman confiscated her vendor's license. In the fracas, her mother suffered spinal injuries. Officials apologized to Wang and compensated her for her losses, including her mother's medical expenses...
...Mall, got 500,000 donors to give $7 million and managed to attract 1,421 entries to a professionally judged design competition. V.V.M.F. wanted a "reflective and contemplative" memorial with an "emphasis ... on those who died"-including a display of their names-and "without political or military content." Maya Ying Lin, then a Yale architecture student, won the competition with her subtle, somber design, which looks like manicured stone ramparts: two angled walls, each 250 ft. long, sloping down into the ground from a height of 10 ft. at their junction. The carved names of the dead begin...
...women who did something beyond themselves, whatever their reasons. It is a memorial to the young and their nation, to the coming together finally in human tribute. G.I.s and Presidents will walk side by side in memory. Differences will merge. The memorial design is by a Chinese American, Maya Ying Lin, 22. The monument's sponsors are asking that demonstrators for any cause be perpetually banned from the site (as they are in Arlington National Cemetery), so that the tribute to sacrifice will not be corrupted by partisan politics or positions...
...winning design, picked from among 1,421 entries last May in a national competition, was submitted by a Chinese American, Maya Ying Lin, 22. "I've studied funerary architecture, the relation of architecture to death," says Lin. She has pointed the 200-ft.-long walls of her memorial west to the Lincoln Memorial and east to the Washington Monument. On those walls will be listed the names of the 57,709 Americans who died or were declared missing in Viet Nam. The names will appear in chronological, not alphabetical, order (another source of criticism). The roll begins...
