...glad to see Taiwan's newly elected President Ma Ying-jeou selected by TIME as one of the most influential people in the world. My generation of Taiwanese has seen so many changes since 1987, the year Taiwan abolished the Martial Law. We don't mind change. Though Ma is no Messiah, a risk-tamed China may be a reward captured for Taiwan. Song Xiaowen, ZHONGLI CITY, TAIWAN...

...Messiah Zoher Abdoolcarim's essay "Taiwan's New Promise" is too flattering to Taiwan's newly elected President, Ma Ying-jeou [April 7]. Ma is more like a celebrity than a President, and his rosy policies announced during the election will be harmful to Taiwan and helpful to China's ambition to annex Taiwan. Taiwan is a unique and beautiful country whose fate lies in the hands of its own people, not those of any other country. We are all expecting a change for Taiwan. World, just wait and see. Vivian Wei-An Tsai, Taichung...

Nationalist Party frontman and Harvard Law School (HLS) graduate Ma Ying-jeou is set to assume Taiwan’s top executive office in the wake of his victory in the country’s recent presidential elections. Ma, a 1981 HLS alumnus and the former mayor of Taipei City, won Taiwan’s March 22 election by a 17 percent margin. His party, considered more favorable to a rapprochement with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) than the rival Democratic Progressive Party, will face challenges in reestablishing relations with the Mainland. HLS professor and Director...
