...Princess Yolanda of Savoy, 51, daughter of the late King Victor Emmanuel, while driving with her husband, Count Carlo Calvi di Bergolo, along a highway near Milan, saw a tank truck swerve from the road and plunge into a ravine. While her husband drove to the nearest village for help, the princess, an expert golfer, swimmer and tennis player, broke into the truck's cab (the wreck had buckled the doors) and rescued the two drivers, who were drowning in wine. ...really managed to transcend their parts. They were the charlatan and the bumbler,, two types always showered with the gems of Gilbert's word-patterns, and they carried to the audience the spriteliness that is necessary for a true appreciation of the operetta. This too typical domestic scene is complemented by giggles from Yo-Yo (Yolanda, an actress who should have been left on the string) and snide marriage-night remarks from Drake...
Dave Shapiro plays the Assistant Tormentor, Wilfred, with some fine, in-character mugging. A young lady with a lovely voice, Mary Warren Bartlett, is charming as the heroine, Elsie. Others who perform lustily and well are Timothy Wise, J. Vernon Patrick, Yolanda Lyon, and Jean Campbell. The setting by George Hersey is excellent, considering the fantastic limitations of his stage. Musical Director Norman R. Shapiro, and the entire troupe have turned out a production that does well by Gilbert and Sullivan...
