...coincidence, but U.S. military aid to Israel seems to flow most freely when Jerusalem complies most readily with Washington's wishes. The 1973 Yom Kippur War is an example. When Israel reluctantly yielded to American pressure and lifted its siege of the encircled Egyptian Third Army, thus giving up an opportunity to cripple Cairo's military machine for years to come, compensation quickly followed. U.S. military assistance soared to a total of $3 billion in 1973-74. After Secretary of State Henry Kissinger's shuttle diplomacy failed last March, the flow of strategic and tactical weaponry...

...because of the Yom Kippur War there was a potential confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union. I don't think either one of us wanted it. If there was another outbreak of war in the Middle East, a series of circumstances might develop and we again, despite détente, could be led into a confrontation. We don't want that to happen. I don't think they want that to happen. I suspect that they would rather have peaceful moves made there to avoid confrontation with...

Rabin's stern Diktat was not unprecedented; former Minister Eban was prohibited from publishing his diplomatic memoirs of the Six-Day War. Large portions of Golan's 300-page review of the Yom Kippur War and its diplomatic aftermath consisted of official documents tied together with transitional passages. As diplomatic correspondent of the fiercely independent Hebrew-language daily Ha'aretz (circ. 55,000), Golan obviously had access to top-level sources, possibly within Israel's notoriously leaky Cabinet. Along with trading Kissinger stories last week, Israelis debated the identity of their own Deep Throat...

...strong Israel is an asset to the U.S. in the Middle East. If I look backward, I see that the support of the various administrations has not harmed the U.S. in this region. I'd say the opposite. Despite the U.S. supply of arms to Israel during the Yom Kippur War, the gates of Cairo and Damascus later were opened to an American President. The Arabs realize that the U.S. is a factor in any effort to bring about a real political settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict...

UNITED JEWISH APPEAL (UJA). Founded in 1939, it is probably the most successful nongovernmental money-raising organization in the world. Thousands of volunteers annually help it solicit donations for humanitarian aid to Israel from other Jewish groups, local federations and individuals. Partly in response to the Yom Kippur War, the UJA raised $828 million in cash and pledges in 1973 and $897 million last year...
