Chagnon, a member of Neel's 1968 expedition, said last week he had yet to see galleys either of the book or of an excerpt scheduled to be published next week in the New Yorker magazine. The New Yorker did offer to interview him, but he declined. In a widely circulated e-mail, he charged that an American Anthropological Association open forum next month would be "a feeding frenzy in which I am the bait." In a statement posted on a website of the University of California at Santa Barbara, where he remains professor emeritus, he accuses Tierney, Turner...

Lazio changed the subject in Buffalo. Early on, after Clinton offered a lame defense of her disastrous 1994 health-care-reform plan, Lazio scored by saying that "a New Yorker would never have made that proposal," neatly tying her health-care problem to her carpetbagger problem. These are disabilities, you know, and (to speak correctly) a special kind of challenge; but (to speak incorrectly) he's still a f------ moron! The New Yorker's back page was devoted last week to a procession of cartoons of Bush entitled "Language Gets the Death Penalty," and quoting some of W.'s more hilarious gaffes ("I know how hard it is for you to put food on your family...

...crane over it, literally trying to enter the book. Many of the spreads, including the fold-open dust jacket, are crazy quilts, stitched with dotted lines and arrows, as if the very seams were straining to contain the story. "You have to keep turning the book," says New Yorker cartoonist Art Spiegelman, who first nationally published Ware in Raw magazine. "It's a dizzy-making, Oz-like tornado that takes you out of Kansas and into his world...
