That fear is already evident. In Boston last week, after listening to a group of antinuclear physicians proclaim the hazards of radiation in a series of papers, a young woman whose husband had to go to Harrisburg on business stood up and addressed the panel. Said she: "I don't want him to go, but he says it's his job. We're having a big fight." Would he be safe? she asked the physicians. None could give her a firm answer...
...Dobelle, the young, pretty mistress of U.S. protocol at the State Department, announced the signing in a firm full voice. Pens glided smoothly across the pages, and in a few minutes Carter looked up from the last signature and said, "Let's have a handshake." Applause rose again as the men came together and clasped in a three-way grip like a debating team that had just won the match...

When the great director King Vidor made The Champ in 1931, he created a four-handkerchief corker; a fine cast (Wallace Beery, the young Jackie Cooper, Irene Rich) and Vidor's emotional restraint prevented a sugary story from caramelizing. This remake, directed by Franco Zeffirelli (Romeo and Juliet), is another matter entirely. By miscasting all three major roles, adding 35 minutes to the original film's running time and reaching for cheap effects, the director has gilded a lily and then shredded...
...thinking too hard, and so is Dunaway. This actress's repertoire of neurotic mannerisms brings back unwanted memories of her performance in Chinatown, even to the point of imbuing The Champ with bizarre incestuous undercurrents. As the young object of Dunaway's affections, the freckle-faced Schroder cries on any and every cue. Tears flood the screen, but at theaters where this Champ is playing, there won't be a wet eye in the house. -Frank Rich
