...Henny Youngman & The Righteous Jazz Band--Swifts...
corrective education disguised as comedy. Fiona French's timing is not exactly Henny Youngman's. and the practical joke that a nobleman plays on a sculptor is somewhat short of hilarious. But her illustrations make shrewd use of the quattrocento palette and the faces on old coins. If Dante had ever written a children's book, these are the paintings he would have wanted in the middle of the journey...
...Faculty Discussion: "The Study of Film in the University," with stanley Cavell, Cabot Professor of Aesthetics and the General Theory of Value (great title, eh?). A movie will be shown and analyzed, which sounds like it'll be about as much fun as an evening with Henny Youngman. Cavell is a brilliant guy, but his lecturing style tends towards the dull and the obscure. Another harbinger--this one of all the dull lectures you will attend. We recommend a pass on this one. You'd be better off doing what we've told you to do every other night...
...Youngman's got the violin--great for pacing. Frye does imitations--classy. Me? I say pathetic things about myself for a living. All I've got going for me is the pathos. Did you know that Art Carney turned down an invitation to speak at Harvard Class Day Exercises in 1957 because he felt he couldn't miss a single taping of the Honeymooners? You know I write all my own material? Nobody else wanted to. I don't get no respect. The mailman bites my dog. My mother-in-law bites the mailman. My wife is so dumb that...

Brooks never gives up; in his films he is apparently searching for a better balance between sight gags, one-liners, and developed routines. He has come close before--The Producers, his first film, is one of the funniest movies ever made, and Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein were outrageous parodies of two moribund film genres. But his last film, Silent Movie, was a bomb, although it reflected a willingness...
