More than 90% of Thais are practicing Buddhists, and the symbols of religion are omnipresent: young men in saffron robes practicing the 227 rules of tripitaka (the summation of Hinayana Doctrine), temples that dominate the jumbled skyline of humid, traffic-jammed Bangkok. Another symbol of Thai unity is the country's constitutional monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, 51, whose official title is King Rama IX. A talented jazz saxophonist who was born in Cambridge, Mass. (where his father was a medical student), the shy monarch travels constantly throughout the country. He personally hands out diplomas to all graduates of state...
...object of all this enthusiasm is a 40-lb. slab of foam-filled polyethylene, 12 ft. long and shaped like a surfboard, but with a sail attached. Such a wind-surfing board will support up to 400 Ibs. The craft was invented twelve years ago when two young Californians, Hoyle Schweitzer, a surfer, and Jim Drake, a sailor, one day began arguing the merits and problems of their respective passions. His many disappointed partisans in the audience formed a committee to raise the equivalent of the $10,000 grand prize for him, and he soon had all the publicity and bookings a young art ist needs. As this release shows, he has all the more fundamental qualities a young artist needs too: exuberant virtuosity, a formidable command of pianistic sonorities and lots of sensitive, poetic feeling. -Christopher Porterfield
...pleasures of this loose, warm, funny movie extend well beyond the plot. Dave has three teen-age cronies (Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern and Jackie Earle Haley), all clearly defined by Writer Tesich and well played by the young actors. The kids' style of hanging out-their scrapes, gags and their frustrations-is observed with a tart affection and a truthfulness that are very refreshing. So is their milieu. The boys are townies, called "cutters," because people of their class have traditionally worked in the nearby limestone quarries in Bloomington, where Indiana University is located. The resentment the cutters feel...
