...nonprofit organizations tell TIME that since the recession hit, several have canceled commitments to help fund projects. "We have had three or four partners pull out since October or November, after we had every expectation of the money," says the head of a small organization in London that runs youth programs in eight countries, mostly in Africa. (He did not want to be named for fear of angering donors.) Says Hildy Simmons, who runs a Wall Street philanthropic-advisory service: "There is no new money going into corporate programs, plus whatever monies there were are diminishing...
...Lady from the Sea. The plot is high harlequin: a dark and stormy night, a chronically sensitive young wife aching for a strong rogue to free her from the marital cage. But Richardson let star quality shine through, with a grandeur audiences had been hoping for since her youth. Virtually channeling her mother, she had all the intensity, and nearly the magic, of Vanessa Redgrave in her early radiance. Shannon is survived by his wife...
...mother, habitué of the haute monde and a J. Crewian everywoman. She is not all of those women, she is simply one woman, with many facets. In a 2004 speech, then-Senator Obama declared that we must, “eradicate the slander that says a black youth with a book is acting white.” Similarly, we must stamp out the belief that a woman who is layered, and can react to her environment without fundamentally changing herself, is somehow abnormal or unacceptable. Hip-hop, perhaps even more than other styles of music, is certainly not immune...
