Most Americans associate inexpensive, imported cars with vehicles made in Japan. The Yugoslav-made Yugo GV, which went on sale last week, aims to change . all that. At $3,990 it is the lowest-price auto sold in the U.S., $1,000 less than the next cheapest car, Chevrolet's Japanese-made Sprint. Yet the Yugo's sticker price seems to be just what buyers want. Says Bricklin, 45, a New York City businessman who introduced the first Japanese Subaru to the U.S. in 1968 but crashed...

Bricklin is pointing his latest venture at the same bargain-minded crowd that snapped up the Volkswagen Beetle in the 1960s. At 11 ft. 51½ in. in length, the Yugo is 3½ in. shorter than the Japanese-built Chevrolet Sprint, currently the smallest new car available in the U.S., and will cost $1,161 less.
