...that is the surprising part. It would have been so easy for the yuk-meisters of Bow St. to botch this up. The magazine that bears the group's name, that semi-monthly, pseudo-intellectual, masturbatory, unfunny, sub-collegiate journal, gives even sign that the Poonies would use People as a vehicle to make fun of the folks who can't understand the subtle humor of their magazine. But they didn't do that. Rather, they accepted People--and People's people, subjects and readers alike--on their own terms and emerged triumphantly...

While most of the film's humor consists of raunchy, Animal House-type yuk-yuks, complete with crashes, screeching cars, and general destruction, Bill Murray's performance as Thompson provides the movie with its only originality. Whether hungrily gobbling amphetamines, babbling stoned before a college audience, or scrambling around imaginary linebackers in a hotel lobby, Murray's lunacy is inspired and hilarious. Proving himself a gifted comedian, Murray, even at his most lunatic, displays a masterful control over his performance and an ability to rise above the banality of the script and the mediocrity of the direction...
...lust, the Brooks Brothers suit and the job on Wall Street after graduation. These are fit objects for satire, but not when the satirists are the villains themselves--then the humor is only a device to distance these people from their own guilt. It is offensive to hear somebody yuk it up about working for Cravath, Swaine and then go interview with them the next day. Yukking it up about corporate fascism makes it a lot easier to live with yourself when you become a part...
