...Shuman '98), the son of the Mikado of all Japan, has fled his father's court in the face of his upcoming nuptials to Katisha (Tuesday Rupp), a ferocious elderly noblewoman. While disguised as a wandering minstrel, Nanki-Poo has met and fallen in love with the delicious Yum-Yum (Caline Yamakawa)--but their amours were frustrated by the fact that the tailor Ko-Ko (Paul D. Siemens '98), the guardian of Yum-Yum and her sisters, planned to marry the girl himself. As the play opens, Nanki-Poo has returned to Yum-Yum's town of Titipu after hearing...
...cast of characters, this production might easily have been allowed to ride on the abilities of a few, letting mediocrity slide by around the edges. Fortunately, that isn't an issue here; each of the central players demonstrate a startlingly high level of energy. As the young romantic protagonists Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo, Yamakawa and Shuman are thoroughly engaging, projecting the strange blend of world-wisdom and innocence that make Gilbert and Sullivan's heroes so appealing--by the time he's finished his introductory song, "A Wandering Minstrel I," Shuman has won us over. ...Augustine '01, too, goes beyond the call of duty as Pish-Tush, a secondary member of the local nobility, brightening the stage with manic clowning and energetically comic embellishments of every conceivable line and mannerism. And Jaclyn A. Huberman '01 busts out in the role of Yum-Yum's sister Pitti-Sing, delivering a hilariously physical performance as the tough-minded and aggressively sexy schoolgirl...
...order from 2,000 Big King patties the first week to 5,000 last week, and manager Lolita Aldana says lunch lines have doubled. The secret to the American stomach, circa 1997? The Big King has 75% more beef than the Big Mac, an extra 12 grams of fat (yum!) and no soggy third bun in the center. Most important, it has cost just 99[cents]. Such a simple strategy--more food for less money--contrasts with McDonald's weird pitch for the Arch Deluxe (the "grownup" burger that has flopped so far) and its recent 55[cents] promotion...
Sour grapes, say Republicans, the griping of Democrats who used to go yum-yum at the same trough where they now go tsk-tsk. In 1994, before the G.O.P. takeover of Congress, Democrats reaped two-thirds of the money donated by the top 400 political-action committees. During the first six months of this year, it was House Republicans who got nearly 60% of campaign contributions from the same sources. In that same period the National Republican Congressional Committee raised $18.7 million, four times the amount that went to its Democratic counterpart...
