In particular, consumers are fleeing casual, family chain restaurants for the convenience and savings of fast food. (Yum! Brands, which owns KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, and Burger King have also seen sales growth, though at smaller levels than McDonald's.) Casual-dining joints are reeling: P.F. Chang's and the Cheesecake Factory, for example, saw their third-quarter 2008 profits fall 43% and 36%, respectively. Bennigan...

...space-chase saga but an uncommonly spartan, raw, unflashy one. There are no cute droids ŕ la Star Wars or sexy aliens ŕ la Star Trek. Its universe is dirty, lived in and worn out. The ships are cramped. The humans carry guns that shoot bullets; they also eat--yum!--processed algae vacuumed up from uninhabited planets. New York City has had a similar law in effect since the end of spring. Many Starbucks locations nationwide have already begun labeling their menus, and Yum! Brands—the owner of KFC and Pizza Hut—has announced it will put calorie counts in the overhead menus at all of its restaurants. Harvard may be able to shelter its students from much of the outside world, but since calorie counts will be a part...

Even when we landed in Beijing, no one at the airport seemed to pay much attention to the Thai weightlifters. They should have stood out in the crowd, these well-muscled men and women hefting giant boxes of tom yum (hot and sour) instant noodles off the baggage carousel. (I guess we now know the secret ingredient to their success.) But as they pushed their luggage carts full of noodles past the airport crowds, no one came up for an autograph or asked them to pose for a picture. Dashiell, though, seemed to remember the man who retrieved his duckie...
