...adorn the public album of his private life, he has chosen Galya, 8, his only greatgrandchild. The Brezhnevs' children are Galina, about 50, once married to a circus animal trainer and now the wife of Yuri Churbanov, First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs; Yuri, 48, a Deputy Foreign Trade Minister; and Mikhail, 44, a journalist of whom little is known. There are three grandchildren: Yuri's sons Leonid, 25, and Andrei, 20, and Galina's daughter Victoria (Galya's mother). Brezhnev seems to have spent little time with them. In a candid moment, he once talked...

...revealing title "Cadres of the Church and Legal Measures to Curtail Their Activities"-appear in the current issue of the human rights journal RCDA: Religion in Communist Dominated Areas. Predictably, Moscow denies the document's authenticity. Claiming never to have seen the memo, Soviet Religious Affairs Spokesman Yuri Smirnov told TIME that it is the work of "enemies" who are "trying to turn the church into a political foe of the state." Walt justifiably complains that the single Soviet representative to the Harvard conference, diplomat Yuri Kaprolov, presented a one-sided, and largely incorrect, history of the arms race. But Walt does not add that other speakers were quick to express similar skepticism at the time. Because the audience demonstrated a naive enthusiasm by applauding the Soviet emissary, they should not be condemned to silence on the broader issues under scrutiny. Walt's suggestion that the public reserve criticism of current policies until it can offer politicians and military leaders detailed and specific proposals reveals not only narrow-minded elitism, but also...

...teach-ins generally did not address the complexities of the strategic struggle with the Soviet Union, or that country's own massive buildup of nuclear weapons. Yuri Kapralov, a counselor at the Soviet embassy, told a crowd in Boston: "I wish your leaders would talk as clearly and forcefully for peace as ours do." Said Jeffrey Knopf, a Harvard junior: "We're simply asking the Government to call the Soviets' bluff. The U.S. hasn't even matched the Soviets' willingness to talk...

...Yuri Kapralov, the lone Soviet participant in the nationwide proceedings, offered similarly questionable statements. It may be too optimistic to expect objectivity from a government spokesman, but Kapralov demonstrated a disdain for factual clarity that was truly remarkable. His claim that the United States had been the first to develop intercontinental ballistic missiles and missile launching submarines, thereby forcing the Soviet Union to respond, is simply not true. The Soviets first tested an ICBM in 1957, well before the first U.S. test firing in November 1958. Soviet missile submarines, though markedly inferior to the American Polaris system, appeared earlier...
