...remain the largest bloc in the legislature with up to 25 percent of the vote. But given that Sunday's vote is a warm-up for next July's presidential election, the more interesting battle is for second place. When former prime minister Yevgeny Primakov and Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov joined forces earlier this year to create the Fatherland-All Russia bloc, they looked like an unbeatable combination to win both the Duma and the presidency. But public enthusiasm for the war in Chechnya has propelled neophyte prime minister Vladimir Putin into a commanding lead in the presidential stakes...
...officer commanding the base, Colonel Yuri Em, invites us to lunch. No one was expecting us, we are told as we sit down to a light but tasty lunch of borscht followed by meat and buckwheat and served by young women in dazzling white mess jackets. Somehow this does not seem like daily fare. The soldiers on perimeter duty are not very talkative, in part because there are officers present. Morale is definitely higher than during the last war; casualties for many units have so far been...
...work of art. Though he was only 27 when it premiered, Ivanov shows all the subtlety and tenderness that would only grow in Anoton Chekov's later, more famous works. The new production of Ivanov now running at the American Repertory Theatre (A.R.T.) is also astonishingly gorgeous. Despite appearances, however, Putin, may not be the man in charge of the Chechnya campaign. "The generals have reemerged as a serious force in Russian politics," says TIME Moscow correspondent Yuri Zarakhovich. "The process began with last year's sudden deployment in Kosovo, which was a far more serious development in Russian domestic politics than the West realized at the time." Back then the Kremlin found itself playing catch-up as the generals ordered their men to seize Pristina airport...
...hazelnut imbroglio wasn't Tony's first dip into murky foreign political waters. In 1997, sources tell TIME, Tony--working as a consultant for a company trying to do business in Russia--arranged a White House meeting for Moscow's powerful Mayor Yuri Luzhkov. Rodham was working for Gene Prescott, who was involved in IBN, a start-up that wanted to bring "smart" credit-debit cards to Russia and was hoping for the support of Luzhkov. Prescott knew Luzhkov wanted to meet with Clinton and asked Tony if he could set it up, according to Tony. Former White House officials...
