As most of the world read it, the communique that Nixon and Chou signed in Shanghai seemed to show some important American "concessions" to Peking on the Taiwan question. For the first time, the U.S. formally adopted the position, held by both Nationalists and Communists, that there is "but one China and that Taiwan is part of China." They took to hooting and whistling while Yevtushenko writhed in the fog of 20th Century pain, a favorite theme of his. Then the chorus began to chant "push-and-shout, push-and-shout, zig-zag, zig-zag" and they howled an assortment of animal groans. This was done in a kind of dialogue with Yevtushenko and Barry Boys who at some point began to alternate verses. I don't recall if the poem ended on a zig or a zag...

...night in Tijuana was a lot dingier than we had expected, even though we had been there before. It is really a grim city. American cars without mufflers from the early 50's roar in zig-zag patterns down the gray, blotched sidewalks. Pre-teen hookers and wiry heroin-pushers alternate street corners. A lack of curiosity and daring kept us moving past them towards tourist shops...
