Died. Schneor Zalman Shazar, 84, spirited, scholarly President of Israel from 1963 to 1973; in Jerusalem. A Zionist and socialist during his youth in Russia, Shazar emigrated in 1924 to Palestine, where he edited the labor movement newspaper Davar. Poet, historian and compelling orator, he helped write Israel's declaration of independence in 1948 and served as the new state's first Education Minister before assuming -as a "man without enemies," in Premier David Ben-Gurion's phrase-the primarily ceremonial presidency. "Revolutionary warfare is a war of justice," he told the court in an excitable singsong baritone that had to be cut off frequently...

Led by President Zalman Shazar and Premier Golda Meir, the pilgrims were bound for the Negev kibbutz of Sde Boker to pay homage, on his 85th birthday, to former Premier David Ben-Gurion...
...Eshkol called her a shrew. Yitzhak Raphael, a National Religious Party leader, labeled her a liar. She has been threatened with murder and having acid thrown in her eyes. She is sometimes tailed by thugs, and she gets more hate mail than an Arab sympathizer. Says former Education Minister Zalman Aranne: "She leaves scorched people and scorched earth behind...
