...twitching on the ground. In the U.S., for example, Nova Products Inc., in Cookeville, Tenn., sells a Police Special to law agencies that delivers 75,000 volts from two metal tips at the end of the prod. Air Taser Inc., in Scottsdale, Ariz., manufactures an air gun that can zap an assailant 15 ft. away with two fishhook-like darts connected by thin wires to the power unit. Stun Tech Inc., in Cleveland, Ohio, produces an electrobelt that wraps around a prisoner's waist. If the prisoner becomes unruly, a guard pushes a button on a transmitter to deliver...

Your item about the ban on leaf blowers in Los Angeles [PEOPLE, Dec. 15] had some mistakes. Although we value Julie Newmar as one of our members, she was not one of the founders of the Zero Air Pollution group, as you implied. Also, ZAP was organized mostly by hardworking members of the middle class, not celebrities. And, finally, your statement that the cops won't enforce the ban isn't true. Seven (Luaka Bop/Warner Bros.), Zap Mama's new album, is actually its third release (the whimsical Daulne liked the symbolism of the number seven). It's a creative breakthrough for the group--its previous work, which was mostly a cappella, often seemed unfinished and overly jokey. For Seven, instrumentalists have been brought in to help out, as have some accomplished producers, including Michael Franti of the hip-hop soul group Spearhead...

Launched in March, MTV's animated comedy Daria (Monday, 10:30 p.m. EDT) focuses on a brainy girl who may not zap ice-cream cones, Alex Mack-style, in the face of uncharitable classmates but can always cut them down with her sharp tongue. Meanwhile, Nickelodeon's The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo (Saturday, 9 p.m. EDT) offers up a modernized Nancy Drew in flannel shirts. Played by a Harvard senior, Irene Ng, Shelby is an after-school police-department intern who just can't curb her urge to fight crime as an extracurricular activity. Then there...
