...issue of why America, alone among Western democracies, puts people to death. Is capital punishment meant to benefit society or provide comfort to the victimized? On the question of whether capital punishment deters crime, McVeigh doesn't shed much light; there's no deterrence value in executing a zealot (true believers, after all, want to die for the cause). But deterrence is always murky; there's no proof capital punishment discourages crime by anyone other than the criminals who get executed. Death-penalty proponent Glenn Lammi, chief counsel of the legal-studies division of the Washington Legal Foundation, admits that...

That is a zealot's stretch. But the trend toward "strategic philanthropy"--giving in a way that benefits the corporate bottom line--is unmistakable. In the lean and mean 1990s, companies are taking a close look at where every penny they give away goes. More and more, they are focusing on areas that resonate with their customers. So Whirlpool, whose main customers are mothers, concentrates on funding things like child care and job training for women...

Your glowing article on William Bennett topped with the halo on his head [NATION, Sept. 16] made me sick. "Life is good" for the millionaire, who is nothing more than a blowhard preacher without the credentials. Who is this rich, anti-gay, anti-choice, pro-corporal- and capital-punishment zealot to tell people who struggle every day to get by about "'moral poverty' born of negligent parenting, welfare dependency and too easy divorce"? I am sick of the crop of rich Republicans who hypocritically sermonize about the decline in "family values," when their values translated into actions destroy the families...

Tracing this sentiment led investigators to a variety of suspects, any of whom may--or may not--be responsible. Among the candidates are Ramzi Yousef and his supporters. Yousef belongs to a new breed of Islamic zealot trained in the Afghan war. He was captured in Pakistan and extradited to the U.S. last year. Accused of masterminding a fiendishly elaborate plot to blow up U.S. passenger planes over the Pacific, Yousef is now entering his eighth week of trial in New York City. Counterterrorism experts fear remnants of his group may still be active...

...ZEALOT ON ANY SIDE OF THE origin-of-species debate, but when I read the headline "Evolution's Big Bang," I got excited. It implied that a group of scientists has somehow figured everything out and that the Big Bang is no longer a theory but fact. But actually this concept of evolving life should still only be referred to as a theory, because it cannot be scientifically proved. DOUG WEST Lebanon, Oregon Via E-mail...
