...personal magnetism, he is uninterested in playing politics, even within the confines of evangelical gatherings. He offers little to contradict Martin's picture of a fairly conservative caretaker of his father's apparatus, unwilling and perhaps unable to push it back into the center of the zeitgeist. And yet no one else has his father's blessing. Says Billy: "Franklin is a leader. When he walks into a room, people sense his presence." Or, as the prodigal's father might have put it, "Bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us celebrate with a feast...
GARRY TRUDEAU is so successful as a cartoonist--Doonesbury, his definitive evocation of the baby-boomer zeitgeist, appears in 1,200 U.S. newspapers and has won a Pulitzer Prize--that he may be neglected as a writer. This week we welcome him to Time as a contributor of a hybrid Essay form that proves he's as amusing in words as in images. Now whether or not, inside himself, that fits his zeitgeist, I haven't a clue...
Stettheimer was mesmerized by this sense of breakout, its glitter and fun, its internationalism and Americanness. Her art records, and gently satirizes, that zeitgeist. Nobody could call Stettheimer a major artist, but she didn't deserve the half-century of near oblivion that the new show brings to an end. This was partly her own doing: for all her love of camp flamboyance, Stettheimer wanted to arrange the disappearance of her own work and ordered her executors to destroy the contents of her studio. Fortunately, they disobeyed. Her friend Marcel Duchamp arranged an exhibition for her at the Museum...
