...been, for years--white guilt and black pain colluding to forget. But periodically the zeitgeist erupts with flashbacks to a tragedy whose costs are still exacted on the street corners of America, at water coolers, in classrooms, along Sunday pews. Now is such a time. Last month in New Orleans, the name of George Washington, a former slave owner, was removed from a school. This week Amistad, Steven Spielberg's epic about a famous 1839 slave revolt, premieres. Currently in repertory at the Chicago Lyric Opera is Anthony Davis' opera, also titled Amistad...
...cultural perspective, and the Bush era wasn't such a bad time to be a teenage girl. It was during the late 1980s and early '90s that knowing young women in hair dyed the darkest shade of no-one-understands-me seemed to claim their place in the Zeitgeist. Launched in 1988, the now defunct Sassy magazine racked up awards and hundreds of thousands of subscribers as the first teen magazine to pay homage to girls uninterested in bubble-gum pop and the notion that true love flows only to those who wear tube tops. In 1989 came the cult...
...YORK--It may be impossible to finger the zeitgeist of contemporary art, but lucky for us the Whitney Museum would rather die than give up trying. Critics, however, would probably have killed the Whitney Biennial, the museum's signature showcase of contemporary art, years ago if it weren't for the fact that they would miss having a major exhibition to consistently complain about. The '93 Biennial, which featured the Rodney King video, was deemed too narrow and political, the '95 show too reactionary in its overemphasis on painting. Ironically, this year's exhibition has been labeled "tepid" and "boring...
...Lucasfilm claim. The renaissance began in 1991 with the publication of Heir to the Empire, an original Star Wars novel continuing the adventures of Luke Skywalker and company; it spent a total of 29 weeks on various New York Times best-seller lists. Like a trip wire on the zeitgeist, the novel provided the first glimmer of the public's fresh hunger for a franchise that had largely lain dormant since the mid-'80s. Indeed, Lucasfilm had pretty much stopped licensing Star Wars merchandise, although that quickly turned around: since 1991, hundreds of new Star Wars products have entered...
When Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the door of a church in Wittenberg, they entered the German zeitgeist with seemingly supernatural speed. "It almost appeared," marveled one 16th century writer, "as if the angels themselves had been their messengers and brought them before the eyes of all the people." The real catalyst was slightly more prosaic: the magic of technology. The printing press, which decades earlier had carried the Holy Bible to the masses, now brought them Luther's heresies. Affixed to All Saints Church on Oct. 31, 1517, the 95 theses were by December rolling...
