Possibly to divert international attention from Bonner's trial and conviction, the Soviets released a videotape about the Sakharovs. Obtained by the West German newspaper Bild Zeitung from a Moscow-based journalist known to be well connected with top Soviet officials, the tape was bought by ABC News and broadcast in the U.S. last week. The video event was not especially convincing. Footage purporting to show that the Sakharovs are healthy, indeed prospering, had apparently been taken months ago. The tape had been spliced in many places, and relatives who are now in the West recognized at least...
Support for that notion seemed to come from photos of Sakharov and his wife Yelena Bonner that appeared in the West German tabloid Bild Zeitung on the eve of Mitterrand's visit. The newspaper explained that the pictures had been provided by Victor Louis, an English-speaking Soviet journalist who is widely believed to have KGB connections. One photo purports to show Sakharov strolling through a park in Gorky, the city 250 miles east of Moscow to which he has been exiled, on June 15. "Photos don't prove anything," Sakharov's stepdaughter Tatyana Yankelevich declared after...
...just as partisan in news stories as in editorials. In contrast to American newspapers, which may accompany a straight news story with an interpretive sidebar, West German journals often gloss over the news and publish the analysis. The conservative Kohl has powerful allies: the nationally distributed Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (circ. 332,000), probably the country's most influential daily and all but certainly its weightiest; Die Welt (circ. 210,000), the intellectual flagship of Press Lord Axel Springer's chain, and perhaps the most ardently pro-American, pro-Israeli and anti-Soviet publication in West Germany; Springer...
Also on the left are Frankfurter Rundschau, Die Zeit, a majority of reporters and commentators on West Germany's two major television networks, and many of the staff correspondents of the leading wire service, Deutsche Presse-Agentur. Left of center, but less partisan, is the Suddeutsche Zeitung (circ. 310,000), based in Munich, which spurns ideological zeal and is Germany's nearest equivalent to an independent centrist paper...
...historians claimed last week that they had been shown, months or years ago, apparently spurious Hitler-related items that they now contend came from Stern's supposedly top-secret discovery. Joachim Fest, writer of book and film biographies of Hitler and a co-publisher of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, says, "A not insignificant part of what I was shown was convincing, but doubt won out." Irving said he had seen what he calls a forged letter, supposedly written to Hitler by his Deputy Chancellor Rudolf Hess. Professor Eberhard Jäckel of Stuttgart University lost interest in the materials...
