Reading Bits of Paradise, the newly collected group of 22 stories by Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, is like breathlessly awaiting, again and again, the arrival of a new star. Often written to fit a magazine's word limits, each of these tightly constructed stories focuses on some young, beautiful person who is convinced of the importance of his destiny. ...Harvard undergraduates were wearing pajamas with feet when the T.V. comedy "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" hit the air in the fall of 1959. But at that time Sheila Kuehl, currently a first-year Harvard Law School student, was already playing the part of a college student named Zelda, Dobie Gillis's persistent but successful suitor. Unlike Miller, who read a small shelf of Fitzgerald books and biographies before tackling the script, Weld insists that she did absolutely nothing to prepare for her role. "What appealed to me most was that it had to be done in three weeks," she confesses. "That was just about...

This is the first time her stories appear under her name alone; during her lifetime publishers insisted that Scott's name be used as well to enhance sales. Although Zelda wasn't a professional writer, her style is distinctive and her stories offer far more than entertainment. Zelda's writings resemble sketches, relying little on dialogue and heavily on impressionistic character analysis. Her best, "A Couple of Nuts," traces the destruction of a young couple's marriage due to the interference of an older couple. The episode...
