...through the mountains and plateau deserts of Tibet, studying peoples, religions, archaeology, terrain. Explorer Roerich had painted mystically-panoramas, portraits, and haze-curtained lines of his own imagining. At Darjeeling, India, where his party recuperated from mountain rigors (for five months once they were beleaguered at 40° below zero), dark, deep-eyed men went to gaze raptly at his paintings. In Manhattan, while waiting for his return, esthetes pored over hundreds of his other paintings...

...slowly through the freezing room, like amusement park visitors riding on a scenic railway. Interesting, too, is the scenery, as the walls and ceiling are covered with glittering stalactite formations. But the aluminum boat travels not over water but over calcium chloride at a temperature of 25° below Zero. Having finished their 40-minute ride through the freezing room, the fish, well and quickly frozen, are shipped in a special type of refrigerator car in which a below-freezing temperature is always maintained. The importance of 40-minute freezing lies in the fact that when fish are frozen...

...approach to utter lack of heat, which man has yet achieved, was attained at the University of Leyden last week. Professor W. H. Keesom, physicist chief of the cryogenic (cold-producing) laboratory there, accomplished the difficult and hazardous feat by solidifying helium gas. He reached 458.58° below Fahrenheit Zero, or 273.1° below Centigrade Zero. He was only .82° Centigrade above Absolute Zero, the cold end of the scale which scientists use to measure temperature independently of the properties of any substance...

...cool. Successive passages through the nozzle make the gas increasingly cold, requiring greater and greater pressure to force it through. Liquid hydrogen is used to absorb the heat from cooling helium. Professor Onnes found that helium would not liquefy until reduced to just below five degrees above Absolute Zero. He got the temperature down three more degrees, but could not solidify the helium fluid...
