...surprise there. Figures out this week from the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis show that in April overall consumer spending was down 0.1% from the month before. People are now saving 5.7% of their disposable income, the most since 1995 and a cosmic increase from the zero-savings days of just a few years...
When one of his friends was dealing with a bout of sadness, Clarel Antoine II ’07-’09 knew how to lift his spirits. Though it was almost midnight and the temperature was sub-zero, Antoine hastily made his friend put on a jacket and run outside to the frozen Charles River. Amid the snow and ice, the two friends stepped cautiously onto the frozen river and back to its bank. Antoine died suddenly in late December of last year. After reading one of the stories, the study participants were presented with equally priced choices between two cars, two household cleaners and two dishwashers; in each case, the participants could pick a more luxurious nongreen item (a high-end Sub-Zero dishwasher with a no-spot drying system, for instance) or an eco-friendly item (a dishwasher with a short running time made with recycled components). That gunshot, ripping open a balmy May afternoon, exposed a network of campus drug use, undergrads both buying and selling. Students and police are still trying to piece it together, to tie together the shards they’ve been left...
...George Tiller long ago erased the line between his private life and his public cause, turning his Wichita, Kans., clinic into ground zero in the fight over late-term abortions. Tiller, 67, lived with death threats and was shot in both arms in 1993 by an antiabortion activist. His clinic had been bombed and was the frequent site of protests and prayer vigils, and he was the target of unsuccessful citizen-led legal challenges to shut down his clinic. Just a few weeks ago, the clinic was vandalized; security cameras and lights were damaged. Tiller asked the FBI to investigate...
